This collection includes 12 classic extracts from the 1800s and early 1900s, similar to those in entrance exams. Rich in vocabulary, character insight, and moral dilemmas, they develop comprehension, inference, and writing skills.
Each extract comes with vocabulary support, VIPRSAC-aligned questions, and a creative writing challenge. Children can read independently or with an adult, annotate, and complete activities to boost confidence and increase analysis skills and critical thinking.

A. No, payment is for the whole course, which includes weekly activity packs, marking and feedback, end of unit assessment and end of term progress report. If your child misses a class, they are expected to attend any of the other sessions during the week or an online session on Saturday. GLA Tutors still has to pay for the material to be made, the tutor's fee and the room hire fee for the days they don't attend. Missed classes cannot be refunded.
A. We are not like other clubs, our classes run every day of term and this includes the first week back and the last week of term. We run classes on INSET days, the last day of term and PAR days.
A. Children are assessed at the start of the year and their raw scores are added as a simple percentage to their score card to give a baseline assessment for all topics. We update the score card each full term with new scores for the topics covered that term. Alongside this, they will also get a score for participation and effort. The scores are indicative of their current attainment. This will only be based on the work they do in Night School, and it will not be a true reflection of their wider attainment in school. We ask that you refrain from discussing these reports with their class teacher, as they are not comparable.
Assessments are carried out on the last week of each half term and children will be assessed only on the topics they covered that term. Progress reports will be generated during the break and sent to you via email and WhatsApp.
For children on the appropriate tier of course, a detailed analysis of the results will be carried out and a thorough report will be generated with suggestions for next steps.
A. Children on the R2P courses are encouraged to complete the tasks in the activity pack and any follow-up activities. For children on the 11+ courses, completion of all activities and the homework tasks is mandatory and a condition of enrolment.
To optimise potential, it is suggested that the children engage in three follow-up activities spread throughout the week. This is proven to enhance their 'sticky-knowledge'. Sticky knowledge, in the context of learning and education, refers to the foundational facts, concepts, and skills that students are expected to learn and retain long-term, forming a base for future learning. It's knowledge that "sticks" in memory and is crucial for understanding and building on new information.
Answers are provided in the packs to help parents engage in their child's learning. The tutor will acknowledge all work and reteach any common misconceptions if necessary. Parental engagement in education is crucial for student success, impacting academic achievement, social skills, and overall well-being. When parents actively participate in their child's learning, children tend to exhibit better behaviour, increased confidence, and higher attendance rates. Engaged parents also foster a stronger home-school connection, leading to improved communication and collaboration.
Homework will be marked and feedback given for children on the appropriate tier of course.
A. Yes, we cover VR in English and NVR in Math. The R2P course will also contain elements of both as we have recognised that it sharpens their cognitive ability and improves their vocabulary. It is important to understand that, to be successful in the 11+ and Wandsworth Test, the amount of VR and NVR we can cover is nowhere near enough. Also, leaving it until Year 5 is much too late.
Children need to be practicing for VR and NVR from at least Year 3 onwards at least three times a week. This should increase to daily in Year 5. The important thing to remember is that the test is timed and they only get 30 seconds per question, so fluency and speed is key and this is something that can only be developed over time.
